On Tuesday April 9th, a BIAFF Zoom meeting was held, which attracted 40 or more viewers from the UK and beyond. Howard Smith chaired the evening’s proceedings, which went without a hitch. Five Nuneaton members were part of the audience...Alan, Gerry, Gordon, Jackie and Patrick. Eight 3-Star videos were screened - seven videos and one A/V presentation. Three-star doesn’t sound a super quality standard, but all were well chosen and really most enjoyable. All eight can be accessed on YouTube, and their picture quality was very good. First to be screened was a comedy made by Martin Evans, who’s well known for the type of film of his we saw this evening...called “Litterator”
In the film, a retired telegraph pole alignment officer, with a world view all of his own, takes up litter-picking at the behest of his wife Brenda, and he logs where everything has been found and the condition it’s in ! Second onscreen was “The Freshwater Circle”, by Rod Willerton, whose film enlightened us about a group of six artists, poets and photographers who were attracted to Freshwater Bay on the Isle of Wight.
Nuneaton’s own film, “The Knife Angel” was third onscreen. To my mind it is very well made, though I feel that one piece near the end where the guy narrates rather a long, loud and forceful work, rather needs to be shortened and lowered in volume. But nevertheless a good club film made by several of our members. Alan noted the following points made by some of those who watched Knife Angel...apparently about 40 people watched, including five from Nuneaton Moviemakers (making our little club almost 13% of the international audience). The film was well received; these were some of the comments: - ‘What a powerful message, so sad that young people feel the need to carry a knife’. ‘I've liked that (it was on) YouTube so I can show it to my son later. Knife Angel is amazing, and glad you made a film about it’. ‘Getting - worse not better’. ‘Very powerful documentary, lovely film on a serious topic’. ‘How many knives? How many lives? ‘No knife crime....the film has a very important message’. Watch Knife Angel at
Another comedy? offering on this BIAFF evening was “A Freak Accident” made by Phase 4 film group. A pedestrian has been knocked over and killed?? The car owner is relieved that his car is not damaged!!
An out of the ordinary travel film was screened next...”The Making of Albania” Not a country visited by too many Brits, so take a peek at this one for an unusual taste...
‘In-Between’ was a documentary detailing the differences between the sects in Northern Ireland...there’s no unsightly footage but the mention of the troubles is a bit disconcerting.
A well made, colourful, and a historic piece of an amateur film production.
