Most members will remember the club film, “Old Bill Returns” made in 2008.
Nearly all club members took part in filming the dedication service in Nuneaton’s Riversley Park of the new Boer War statue which had been made to replicate the original one which had been stolen by mindless thieves. One dignitary at the event was former Nuneaton MP, Bill Olner who lived with his wife, Jill, just round the corner from us. He’d often stop to chat on his way to the local shop or during his dog-walking jaunts. Sadly, his health had not been good for some time, and he eventually became a patient in a nursing home, where he passed away on May 18th.
The above photo is a clip taken from ‘Old Bill Returns’, the 2008 dedication Service.
In 2002 Bill spoke to give his thoughts on the excellent Nuneaton Carnival, which the club had just finished filming. The photo belows shows ‘Old Bill’, the affectionate name given by servicemen to the statue of the Boer War soldier.
Angie adds - in a nice demonstration of inter-club co-operation, amateur film-makers in Edinburgh were rallied to film the foundry work on Nuneaton's behalf.
